What happens that is detrimental to pedestrians and cyclists when a “large ship” goes under the bridge?? It doesn’t open, does it?

No the bridge doesn’t actually open for ships to pass under. After the accident in 1975 the practice is to close the bridge to traffic while a ship goes under it, so bridge opening means access allowed again. No wonder you felt a bit flat next day after the high adventure and effort it took to travel where you did on the bike. A great effort!
Wauw that looks very ‘exciting’ and narrow , I wondered if this is a ‘single direction’ , definitely a challenge to cross but you made it , hoera.
