Memoir Out Loud – Hueschte

The treatment of my coughs prior to our move to Switzerland was this creosote lamp.

  1. Nice to hear from you and thanks for sharing this very ‘gripping’ story . The pronunciation of the word Hueschte sounds almost Flemish dialect way of saying ‘hoesten” and also ‘umdrehen’ sounds Flemish ‘omdraaien” . These old medicines reminds me of Alcool Camphré that my grandmother used for several purposes , one of them was a piece of cloth soaked in this alcohol and wrapped around the chest to loosen colds. I wish you a nice weekend .

    1. My pleasure, dear Debora. And thank you so much for keeping your comments going in spite of the long silences. – I love hearing about these similarities between languages – and in Bärndütsch your omdraaien is often written umdräiie with that elongated dipthong rather than the more clipped German umdrehen.

  2. Switzerland and the Swiss doctors were obviously good for you and the family. Spring has arrived here and hopefully will banish the winter coughs. I have a tin of mustard powder, so just let me know if you feel the need for more of that old treatment.

    1. Thank you for the offer Audrey – I wonder whether you have any muslin nappies hidden away, too ?!
I’ve still been pretty old school – Vicks VaporRub, horehound tea, lemon, ginger, honey, garlic…
