No the bridge doesn’t actually open for ships to pass under. After the accident in 1975 the practice is to close the bridge to traffic while a ship goes under it, so bridge opening means access allowed again. No wonder you felt a bit flat next day after the high adventure and effort it took to travel where you did on the bike. A great effort!
